Every class needs its jock. Without him, your football team wouldve been terrible and the grading curve for your chemistry final wouldve been screwed up by the smart kids. In a similar vein, the 2011 Mazda CX-7 could be described as the jock of the compact-crossover class. The CX-7 isnt as sensible as most of its rivals, but its good looking and far more exciting when youre behind the wheel.

Like most other Mazda models, the CX-7 offers precise handling and responsive steering for its class. A radically raked windshield, bulked-up fender flares and a wide-mouth grille are commonalities as well, and wed say they look better on the CX-7 than on its siblings. They certainly add up to a more interesting, and, yes, athletic-looking crossover than such rivals as the Chevy Equinox, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

Of course, those competitors are more practical, blessed with far more space for both passengers and cargo. Families in particular will appreciate the greater versatility and kid-friendly features of the competition. Their engines are also more appealing. True, the Mazdas available turbocharged engine is certainly brawny, but its fuel economy is worst in class. The normally aspirated engine of the base-model CX-7 is more economical, but still not to the degree of the most frugal choices in this class, and its also rather slow.

So as you can see, there are distinct pros and cons to bringing a 2011 Mazda CX-7 home to mom. If youre looking for something thats more sensible though a bit less fun, wed suggest checking out the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage or Subaru Forester. Whoever said picking the jock would be easy?
INTERIOR
The CX-7s athletic styling carries over to the interior of the cabin, where the edgy yet functional design provides a more visually interesting environment than one might expect from a crossover SUV. A sporty three-spoke steering wheel is reminiscent of the one found in the Miata, while the gauge cluster is similar to the RX-8s. Build quality and ergonomics are both very good, although some might find the radio controls a bit complicated compared to other vehicles. The available navigation system is less expensive than those in most other cars, but its small display makes certain information hard to see.

Ample hiproom and headroom keep CX-7 passengers comfortable, even with all five seats occupied. However, rear legroom doesnt measure up to that of chief competitors, notably the Equinox. There are about 30 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seat, while maximum capacity stands at about 59 cubes. The latter number is more than 10 cubes fewer than the class-leading RAV4, Forester and CR-V, but on par with crossovers like the Tucson and Sportage.

The CX-7 seats up to five. The dashboard features double-decker construction, with a large information display at the base of the windshield.

Folding down the rear seats provides a nearly flat load floor, and the seatbacks and rear cargo compartment are coated in plastic. Interior features include:

EXTERIOR

ENGINE
The CX-7 features two engine choices, with the first being a fuel sipping 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with VVT rated at 161 horsepower, mated to a standard 5-speed automatic. The second engine offering is a sportier 2.3-liter DISI turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that cranks out a less civil 244 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

The turbocharged 2.3 is mated to a silky smooth six speed automatic transmission and yields 18 city, and 25 highway in front wheel drive form, and 17 city, 23 highway in AWD form.

Like other Mazda models, both automatic transmissions are equipped with a sport shift mode which allows the driver to select gears manually.
SAFETY
Every 2011 Mazda CX-7 comes standard with traction and stability control, antilock brakes with brake assist, front side airbags and side curtain airbags. In Edmunds brake testing, a CX-7 i Sport came to a stop from 60 mph in 131 feet -- a bit longer than average. In contrast, the CX-7 s Grand Touring stopped in an excellent 113 feet.

The CX-7 has not been rated using the governments new, more strenuous 2011 crash-testing procedures. Its 2010 ratings (which arent comparable to 2011 tests) were a top five-star rating in both front and side collisions. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the CX-7 its highest rating of "Good" for both frontal-offset and side-impact crashworthiness, but the second-worst "Marginal" in the roof strength test.

Both characteristics have been toned down noticeably, but not completely eradicated. The car still fidgets on less-than-perfect surfaces – especially at low speeds – while theres still a little floatiness over dips and crests. 

However, the Mokka is certainly more composed than it was, and the suspension keeps the body upright through tight twists and turns.

Refinement has been improved by new door seals that better isolate the cabin from wind noise. Theres still a bit to be heard, though, along with some road noise – especially on coarse surfaces. DESIGN

Bold and robust, the Vauxhall Mokkas solid, muscular exterior is complemented by design cues that are uniquely Vauxhall.

The front end features a pronounced front grille with a neatly tailored trademark chrome bar featuring the Vauxhall Griffin logo at its centre, framed by bi-xenon eagle eye headlightsthat incorporate LED daytime running lights (standard on the SE).Protective cladding around the bumpers and wheel arches are set against Vauxhalls signature "blade" light catcher on the body side, sweeping upwards to the rear. Upper trim levels feature chrome window inserts and door handles, adding a premium touch.

At the rear, the Vauxhall Mokka has a skid plate in a polished aluminum finish. The rear window is combined with a roof spoiler and distinctly shaped tail lights. Roof rack panels emphasise the almost coupé-like roofline of the Mokka. A unique-in-segment option is Vauxhalls fully-integrated FlexFix bike carrier system, which can be stored in the rear bumper when not in use.

"The Mokka is very different to its competitors: it is small in size but big in attitude," said Malcolm Ward, Lead Design Director Vauxhall/Opel. "We are proud that we managed to develop a car that is perfectly designed for the urban environment while retaining typical SUV traits."

There is a broad offer of ten exterior paints including solid, brilliant, metallic and new three-coat premium colours. Solid colours include Royal Blue and there is the brilliant colour Summit White. The metallic colour range comprises Sovereign Silver, Carbon Flash, Borocay Blue, Velvet Red, Satin Steel Grey, Misty Lake and Deep Espresso Brown. Also available is a three-coat premium colour called Snowflake White.

Road clearance of 157mm makes driving the Mokka off road capable, with wide tracks of 1540mm reinforcing the SUVs muscular stance. Unlike any other model in the compact SUV segment, robust 18-inch alloy wheels are available as standard on all upper trim levels (Exclusiv, Tech Line and SE). Optional 19-inch wheels will also be available soon.

 Interior

Inside, the new Mokka again reflects Vauxhalls sculptural design, with the signature wing-shaped instrument panel that wraps around the door inserts.

Splashes of chrome around the cabin centre are designed to give a premium feel. However, the Vauxhall Mokka is still practical and user friendly, with 19 storage spaces, including a cleverly concealed armrest in the rear bench that also contains a cup holder, and storage areas in front of and behind the gear leaver.

With up to 1,372 litre of loading space, the Mokka offers plenty of versatile features including a cleverly-designed parcel shelf which can be easily adjusted by hand and a rear bench that can be split and folded in a 60:40 ratio providing even more flexible loading and transportation. The Vauxhall Mokka is very much a drivers car with excellent ergonomics and comfort, a high seating position gives a great all-round view out of the vehicle and two-tone coloured, leather-trimmed seats are standard on the SE.

The range-topping Mokka SE has embossed two-tone coloured leather stitching as standard throughout its cabin. The instrument panel and doors are covered in a striking Tungsten Brush (Jet Black seats) or Sephia Bronze film. Customers can also opt for brown Cocoa/Saddle Up leather seats.

In S, Exclusiv and Tech Line trims, there is high quality woven Jet Black cloth or Cocoa/Dark Adriatic seat fabrics (depending on trim), soft seat inserts, a liquid platinum instrument panel and door décor moldings and chrome door release handles.
 Noise is still an issue with some of the engines, too. The 128bhp 1.7-litre diesel is horribly gruff under acceleration and grumbles away even when cruising at motorway speeds. 

The 113bhp 1.6 petrol is also pretty intrusive at motorway speeds, because it lacks a sixth gear, while both petrol engines (the other being a 138bhp 1.4 turbo) get pretty shouty when you work them hard.

Neither of the engines is particularly nippy, but both are perky enough for most drivers. The diesel is stronger, but isn’t as flexible as we’d like, because you need to get the revs above 2000rpm before it really starts to pull.

The 1.6 comes in front-wheel-drive form only, while the 1.4 is exclusively four-wheel drive. The diesel can be had with either.
